Was reading an interesting article in the news how they are syaing the next generation of consoles are going to push out the smaller decelopers and we are going to start seeing games with multi million pound budgets, along with stars, producers , directors, becoming the new well film starts, producers, directors of today.
Just wondering what people thought about this, will we see an independant computer games forum springing up like this, will there be a shootnig people for games developers ?
Is this the sign of film dying out ? well taking a back seat ?

i think it's likely that we are heading towards interactive movies, where the viewer/player in fact is the star but i can't see it pushing out the film we all know and love.
interestin to see what happens tho

The situation is already like that in Japan. The creators of the Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid are big celebrities over there, and games frequently outperform movies in terms of gross.
One bloke and decent computer can make a game. It's a h?ll of a lot easier than making a film by yourself. So there's always going to be independent developers that distribute on the net.

i actually don't see where's the problem.
PC games and films can be two separate fields. since they were invented, pc games always had a director, big budget, actor reading the various parts etc.
they tried to do something like a cross between movies and games with FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN and i think they failed, since the movie looks like a two hour long video game you can't play with it.

games have out grossed movies for about 10 years now, nothing new there. To say characters are like celebrities in Japan is also abit late since just about everyone in the world knew who Mario was 12 years ago whether they had played the game or not.
Games with multi million pound budgets? It costs about 10 million for a low budget game on one of the big consoles, it would go up to about 50 million if it was a really big game. Its about 2 million for a gameboy game i beleive.
Games with stars? James Earl Jones was in Command and Conquer about 8 years ago and im sure there have been others since.

I meant the actual creators of the games are celebrities. Hideo Kojima (director of Metal Gear Solid) is just as, if not more, revered in Japan as your Spielbergs, your Scorceses.

Check out redvsblue.com, and download the blood gulch cronicles. It's pretty creative stuff of some guys making a movie WITH a computer game. If you've ever played HALO on the X-BOX you'll really like it.

The line between video games and film will blur but films will not be replaced entirely. The only kind of films that will be replaced are the no-brainer action flicks - where YOU could be the one in the middle of the action, blowing stuff up or flying the spaceship etc, rather than watching somebody else do it.
At its best Film is art - it tells us something and moves us - a story, a message. Film is a storyteller telling us a story via the medium of images and sound. This is not the case if the viewer is able to CHANGE the story. It would be equivalent to Leonardo Da Vinci leaving half of one of his paintings blank for you to draw in the rest.
Computer games will get bigger, better and more film-like - employing proper actors (as many already do), named directors, cinematographers etc etc - but films will remain also.
Both will continue to serve their respective purpose.

an interactive movie would be cool where 10 times during the movie you have to make a chioce and what combo chooses the ending.

Yeah, but an interactive movie is NOT actually a movie, and it's not a computer game, just a hybrid of the two- and I personally don't think that it would be very good- I think it's a flawed, boring and ultimately pointless idea (so I'm sure it will happen in the future).
Why not just play a computer game???
